Understanding WHY: Making a Commitment to Your Passion

It is terrific that you have found your passion, but in order to change an issue, we must not only be able to name it, but we must be able to fully understand WHY it is a problem in the first place, so that we can combat it at its root.Finding the root causes and the effects of even one issue is not a simple task. Try walking through the following steps to better understand your passion:

Go to your local library or perform an internet search to research your passion as much as you can! What really is the issue? Who does it impact, and where? How often is it a problem?

Try to gather as many facts as you can!

Using your information, ask yourself:

  • Why is this issue important, to you, and to the world?
  • What do you think causes this problem in your community? Why does this problem exist? How is it fueled?
  • What are some of the effects of this problem? Are certain people or areas of the world more affected than others? How will this problem impact people of the future?
  • Try drawing a cause-and-effect map to organize your ideas.
  • Finally, in what ways can you work to solve this problem? Locally? Globally?
